Protect Your Skin Against The Damaging Sun   

Even though summer is just a few short months in Wisconsin, it’s important to take special care of your skin during this time. Our skin is extremely delicate and taking the necessary precautions will go a long way to ensuring healthy skin all year.  Signature Salon & Spa has provided what we feel are the necessary steps to provide the best summer care for your skin.

Sunscreen Is A Must

Sunscreen should be worn every time you step outside on all your exposed skin. Make sure to use different sunscreens for your body and face, since body sunscreen can clog facial pores. The sun’s burning rays are powerful, so it’s important to wear sunscreen every day even on cloudy days. Some of the worst sunburns occur during overcast weather.

When choosing a sunscreen, look for an SPF of at least 30 and don’t be deceived into buying super-high SPF sunscreen. The incremental sun protection diminishes as SPF increases, especially at higher levels. Many sunscreens with a high SPF only effectively block a small % more of the sun’s rays despite the much higher price tag.

It’s also important to choose a water resistant sunscreen with broad-spectrum coverage protecting you from UVA and UVB rays while you swim or sweat. Below you will find some helpful tips when selecting a sunscreen.

Sunscreen Tips

  • Throw away last year's unused sunscreen for a new bottle. 
  • Apply sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and may burn.
  • Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin remembering neck, ears, tops of your feet and scalp. Wearing a sun hat will also protect your scalp from the sun. 
  • Don’t forget your lips! Apply a lip balm with a SPF of at least 15. 
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. Be sure to rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin. 

Sunburn Care

In the event your skin has been burned there is relief out there and techniques to help you heal faster. 

  • Take frequent cool baths or showers to help relieve the pain. As soon as you get out of the bathtub or shower, gently pat yourself dry leaving a little water on your skin. Immediately applying a moisturizer after will help trap the water in your skin easing any dryness.
  • Use a moisturizer containing aloe vera or soy to help soothe sunburned skin.
  • Drink extra water to prevent dehydration. A sunburn draws fluid to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of the body. 
  • If your skin blisters, allow the blisters to heal on their own by leaving them uncovered or covered loosely with a bandage. Do not pick at your skin.

There are an abundant amount of choices when it comes to adding a little summer tint to your skin, and the tanning bed shouldn't be one of them. Using a sunless tanner will give your skin a beautiful and natural looking glow. Even if you're not a fan of using sunless tanners all over your body, applying them to your face may be all you need.  If you alternate your facial moisturizer with a tinted one, you'll look like you just spent the weekend on the beach. Most facial tanners build color gradually, and by alternating will ensure you never look too dark.

Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate

Not only do we mean hydrate with water we mean with lotion as well.  It's time to pack away your thick winter body butters for a lighter, faster absorbing moisturizer. Applying lotion immediately following your shower offers added benefits to your skin by sealing in the moisture your body just soaked in.
