Exfoliate Your Body While at Home

Many are unfamiliar with what dry brushing is and the reason behind the recent trend of this traditional beauty treatment. The experts at Signature Salon & Spa are excited to share details about the benefits of dry brushing.

Dry brushing is a form of mechanical exfoliation. While this beauty regimen has been practiced for many centuries around the world, it’s once again becoming increasingly popular due to its worthy benefits.  Unlike chemical exfoliants, mechanical or physical exfoliators work to remove dead skin by physically scrubbing them off. The dry brushing treatment can be done at home and involves buffing dry skin with a special exfoliating brush to remove the top layer of dead skin cells, smoothing your skin’s overall texture.

The idea of scrubbing your skin may sound rough, and the truth is it can be, therefore it's important to understand the correct techniques to effectively exfoliate skin. Continue reading to learn the proper way to dry brush and all its remarkable benefits.

Increase Blood Circulation

Dry brushing works to increase the circulation of blood and stimulate drainage from the lymphatic system providing energy throughout the body. When you have severely dry skin, dry brushing can help eliminate dry flakes and patches.  Dead skin cells tend to cause skin to look dull and lackluster and upon removal, your skin will be left glowing. Regular exfoliation and removal of dead skin cells allows skin to absorb the ingredients from a daily body cream and/or serum much more effectively.

Diminish Cellulite

While unfortunately dry brushing will not remove cellulite, it can help to minimize the look of it by contributing to a more even distribution of the fat deposits which cause cellulite underneath your skin. Brushing can also bring fresh, oxygenated blood to the surface which can improve the elasticity of your skin. Regular, continuous use of a brush has been proven to leave a smoother look and feel.

Prevent In-Grown Hairs

Yes, we all get them and they are not fun to have! In-grown hairs can be stubborn and painful. Dry brushing prevents ingrown hairs from forming by constantly moving hair out of the way, and also releasing tucked-under in-grown hairs.

Potential Immune System Boost

Skin is our largest organ and one of the main ways our body gets rid of toxins. If our skin is clogged and blocked, we could be missing out on the opportunity to detoxify properly. Dry brushing helps our body eliminate accumulated impurities, while supporting a healthier skin, and stronger immune system.

How To Dry Brush

The most optimal way to dry brush is to slide the body brush over dry skin using sweeping motions rather than circular. It’s important to start brushing at your feet and work your way toward the heart.  Dry brushing is safe however can irritate skin if you have sensitive skin or a skin condition like eczema. We recommend being extra gentle around delicate skin and limit your brushing to only once per week if your skin becomes irritated.

Tips for Dry Brushing:

  • Don’t spend too much time dry brushing - five minutes should suffice.
  • When dry brushing the body, work upward or toward the heart.
  • There's no recommended number of dry brush sessions. It all depends on your skin and how your skin reacts (daily, twice per week, or just once a week – do what works for you).
  • Don't go over and over the same area. This can cause irritations.

Dry brushing is a great opportunity for added self-care. Take this opportunity to relax, unwind and provide your body with the opportunity to support total vitality.
